You Are Smarter Than You Think

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

A client emailed me the other day, worried that she would run out of ideas to blog about.  Laughed so hard hot tea almost came out through my nose.  She has a point though — where do we get our inspiration and ideas to share?  Here’s my top three strategies:

  • Everyday experiences.  If you pay close enough attention, you can learn a lot.  One interaction, one incident.  Doesn’t take much, especially if you spot a pattern.
  • Current events.  Many of you know how much I love research, so guess what I blog about:  yep, my favorite studies.  Don’t just quote the stats though — offer your opinion.  Or share an idea.
  • The rant factor.  If something is important enough to vent about to trusty sidekick Vicky Likens, the issue will be blogged on.  (Usually after I calm down.)  That’s the power of a sounding board.

Bottom line:  many times, our brilliance is just buried.  It takes something outside ourselves to draw it out.

Another free opportunity

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Last week, I sounded the alarm about new expectations of “free stuff.” Now, here’s an example of someone doing it right.

I’ve known Bruce Inouye for over a decade. He’s your typical all-around nice guy, always offering to help. He’s been in the seminar and meeting biz for decades and was an early adopter on the whole blogging thing. What he’s noticed: too many bloggers aren’t getting enough out of their blog to be sustainable.

To help others make money from their efforts, Bruce is presenting “Disover the Secrets of Getting More Customers Using a Blog” seminar on August 27th in Scottsdale, Arizona. And, yes, it is free. No selling, no pitching … just a good guy helping others out. Because he believes it will come back to him tenfold. Click here to get the details and to sign up.

It’s easy to give your expertise away when it’s online — it’s another to give a whole morning of your life in real time, giving real, individual help. As for me, I’m nominating him for sainthood…

Cool content for free

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Last month I talked about the content bar being raised by seminars with no registration fees. Just ran across a perfect example from a long-time colleague: Blog Marketing Experts CEO Bruce Inouye is conducting a seminar with absolutely no pitching and no registration fee. He keeps his events small and intimate — only 25 people can attend — so that folks get individual attention. That’s right: all content, for free. Why? Because he has enough confidence that his content will get him all the clients he needs.

His next event in Scottsdale, Arizona is June 25th if you want to check it out. Here’s the link: http://blogmarketingexperts.com/seminars/

An insider’s look at the executive suite

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

I love the insider’s perspective. One without all the vitriol; a more thoughtful “give it to me straight” style. When I want a finger on the pulse of the executive suite, I go to Joe Nocera’s blog. He comments on all things big business and the comments below can be just as enlightening.

Folks as me what I pay attention to and his blog is on the front page of my RSS feed: http://executivesuite.blogs.nytimes.com/ If you are an expert in big business, this is a great place to post. But be aware: better have your ducks in a row. This is a tough crowd.
